The biggest issue with this volume is that it is not the strongest one in Nick Spencer's Amazing-Spider Man run. While Spencer excels at writing morally ambiguous, funny villains, Carnage is not one of them. Also, the overexposure of symbiotes in recent years does not help. Additionally, the storyline interrupts Mary Jane and Spider-Man's reconciliation after so many years. The artwork depicting sheer terror and hopelessness is remarkable, and Spencer does a great job of portraying Spidey's "kill or be killed" attitude in this volume. However, the inclusion of Carnage and Red Goblin is a letdown, and the story feels like filler issues that tie-up Absolute Carnage.
