All Creatures Great and Small is the first in an autobiographical series by James Herriot, in which he tells of his experiences as a veterinary surgeon in 1930s Yorkshire, England. The book is a treasure, the kind you buy extra copies of to give away and return to like an old friend. Herriot's writing style has the wonderful warm feeling that draws readers in and keeps them captivated. He can find the humor in any situation, while at the same time understanding the seriousness of others. Herriot treats each case with the utmost importance, portraying the bittersweet nature of his job with admirable sincerity, and never deriding his clients' love for their animals.
