The first-person narration allows the writing to be very personal, close and immersive. The portrayal of the girls' friendship and their community is complex, detailed, realistic and illuminating. The intense machismo of the neighbourhood plays a huge part in the dynamics of their relationship. Historical rivalries, resentments and post-war economic and political changes also come into play, making it a fascinating portrait of the time and these people. The ending leaves readers wanting more and looking forward to the next book in the series.
