Martial Arts Editorial Review
This is a review of the book "Attacks in Aikido: How to Do Kogeki, the Attack Techniques" by Stefan Stenudd. The review presents mixed opinions about the book and its usefulness. Some reviewers found the book to be informative, well-put-together and a good reference, especially for serious students, practitioners and those seeking to deepen their understanding of Aikido. They praise the author's detailed treatment of attack techniques, including the mindset and energy required for each attack and the point of the attack. Other reviewers think that the attacks are too common and not new, and they had expected to learn attack techniques that are not found in regular practice. However, they appreciate the author's focus on the uke's side of the equation, the little-covered topic of attacks and his explanations of the origins of Aikido attacks. The book seems to emphasize the role of the tori/nage (attacker) and stresses the importance of proper attack training techniques in Aikido. The author also covers less common attacks, such as bear hugs from behind, and elaborates on the particular challenges of each attack for tori and uke. Overall, the book is recommended for Aikido practitioners who seek to deepen their understanding of the art, but it may not be suitable for those hoping to learn new attack techniques. The Kindle version may also have missing photos, which could detract from the enjoyment of the book.
